Baseball: Mandeville edges Northshore; Hannan, Holy Cross win Monday

Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, March 26

In a great pitcher’s duel, Mandeville edged Northshore 1-0 in the District 6-5A opener Monday for both teams at Mandeville.

Kyle Charrier of Mandeville and Grant Simmons of Northshore were simply outstanding.

Charrier pitched a one-hitter to get the hard-earned win. Charrier walked two and struck out 10, using just 79 pitches.

Simmons allowed just four hits. He walked two and struck out four, using just 71 pitches to take a tough loss.

The Skippers scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases loaded balk.

Wes Carr had two hits for Mandeville while Peyton Chiasson added a single.

Derek Weilbaecher had the lone hit, a single for the Panthers.

Both teams return to district play Wednesday.

Mandeville (16-5, 1-0) plays at Slidell at 6:30 p.m.

Northshore (7-12, 0-1) entertains Ponchatoula at 6:30 p.m.

In District 8-4A play, Archbishop Hannan hammered Salmen 16-1 in a game shortened to four innings by the mercy rule at Salmen.

The Hawks scored in every inning, taking a 3-0 lead after one inning, an 8-0 lead after two innings and a 13-0 lead after three innings. Hannan scored three more runs in the fourth inning and the Spartans scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Mikey Relle led the attack for the Hawks with two doubles and six RBI while Owen Stempel doubled and drove in three runs. Jay Lachney had two RBI. Christian Brito and Jake Wheat each had a hit and an RBI and Patrick Kennedy added an RBI.

Alex Dodd went the distance to get the win. Dodd allowed a run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Archbishop Hannan (13-7, 2-2) returns to district play today, hosting Loranger at 6:30 p.m.

Salmen (1-11, 0-4) entertains Franklinton Wednesday at 4 p.m. in district action.

In non-district action, Holy Cross defeated Archbishop Shaw 4-1 at home.

Scoreless into the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers scored four runs to get the win. Chris Sercovich had two hits and two RBI while Luca Saltaformaggio had a hit and two RBI. Jake Gegenheimer pitched a complete game five-hitter, allowing five hits. Gegenhemier struck out four.

The Eagles got their lone win in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Blair Mills. Dalton Davidson had two hits for the Eagles.

Shaw was victimized by four errors. Davidson pitched very well, going the distance, allowing just one earned run on five hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts.

Holy Cross (9-7) returns to District 9-5A play Thursday against John Curtis Christian Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium.

Shaw (9-12) returns to District 10-4A play today at Belle Chasse at 6:30 p.m.
