Xavier sweeps doubleheader at Tougaloo to open baseball season

Xavier University of Louisiana opened the fourth season of its second baseball era with 10-7 and 7-1 victories Friday against Tougaloo at Tougaloo, Miss.

The Gold Rush got three RBIs apiece from Deionte Norris and Robert Robinson and two RBIs from Zion Morris. Miles Peterson and Norris scored three times each. XULA batters were hit by pitches seven times — both Crews and Cam Finn were plunked twice.

In the first game Norris homered and Alex Crews tripled, and XULA scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull away. Crews doubled in the second game, and Morris’ RBI single in the fourth inning put the Gold Rush ahead to stay.

Winning pitchers Kimani Davis (game one) and Hunter Wheaton allowed two earned runs in a combined nine innings.

XULA and Tougaloo (0-2) will play at 1 p,m. CST Saturday to conclude their three-game series.
