Marcel Volz

FRISCO, Texas – Marcel Volz earned his second Southland Player of the Year award and two doubles teams won All-Southland recognition as the teams were announced on Thursday morning by the conference office.

Volz routinely faced the top player in each match and he put together a 3-1 mark against conference foes. Volz defeated Joao Sasso of the regular season champion, UIW Cardinals 6-4, 6-4. He also earned wins against Nicholls and Lamar. Volz added a late season win over Billy Suarez of Tulane at flight one.

For Volz, it’s another superlative to add to a long list of achievements at New Orleans. He was the Southland Player of the Year in 2022. In 2021, Volz won Southland and LSWA Newcomer of the Year. He has also been a First Team All-Louisiana selection.

Volz and Luke Joujan earned Second Team selections in doubles. The duo were 2-1 at flight two doubles before being moved up to flight one for the season finale against Lamar. Their overall conference record was 3-1 with wins against Nicholls, A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar.

Also in doubles, Matthew Armbruster and Sergi Tintore took a similar path to winning Second Team selections at flight three. The pair went 2-1 at flight three against conference opponents as they scored wins against Nicholls and A&M-Corpus Christi. From Feb. 24 through Apr. 1, Armbruster and Tintore went on a run of five wins in six matches.

Leon Nickel of Lamar won Freshman of the Year. UIW’s Emilio Vila won Newcomer of the Year. Jonas Andersson of UIW won Coach of the Year.
