UC Irvine blanks Tulane in opener

IRVINE, Calif. – It wasn’t an offensive night for the Tulane baseball team (0-1) as they could muster only five hits in their 3-0 loss to UC Irvine (1-0) on Friday evening inside Cicerone Field at Anteater Stadium.

The two teams went scoreless for the first three and a half innings before UCI scored on a single back to the pitcher in the bottom of the third. They would score the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple followed by a sacrifice fly which eventually handed the Olive and Blue a loss on opening night of the college baseball season.

Tulane dropped its first opening day game since 2011 and went without scoring a run on opening night for the first time in over 30 years.

The Green Wave got offensive contributions up and down the lineup as five players collected at least one hit. Sophomores Teo Banks and Gavin Schulz picked up the first two hits, a single through the left side and a double to right center respectively. Seniors Simon Baumgardt, Jared Hart and Brennan Lambert struck later in the game each collecting a hit in one of the last three innings.

“We pitched and played defense well enough to win,” said Tulane head coach Jay Uhlman. “I thought we took too long to settle into the game and when we had opportunities on offense, we just didn’t get the timely hit.”

Junior left-hander Dylan Carmouche took the mound for the Green Wave and tossed 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowing one earned run on four hits and four walks.

Junior Brian Valigosky, graduate student Lane Thomas and redshirt sophomore Gavin Smith made up the team in relief of Carmouche. The three went 3.1 innings giving up two runs while walking one and striking out one.

UP NEXT: With the loss, Tulane falls to 0-1 on the season and will be back on the field tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18, to take on UC Irvine at 3:00 p.m. CT.
