Louisville, KY  – Tulane wide receiver/returner Jha’Quan Jackson has been named to the Paul Hornung Award Preseason Watch List, the Louisville Sports Commission announced on Thursday.

The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, now in its 14th season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission. The Award pays tribute to the late football legend and the Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner in downtown Louisville.

The full list consists of 53 players. Jackson is one of five from the AAC named to the watch list.

Jackson was a Second Team All-American Athletic Conference (AAC) selection last season.  He led the team with his 21 punt returns for 213 yards and a touchdown. His 90-yard return against Memphis was the second-longest in both school and conference history. He also tied for second on the team with his 33 receptions. His 554 receiving yards placed him third on the squad. Jackson’s 87-yard touchdown reception against USC in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl tied the Cotton Bowl record and was tied for the third-longest in school history.

This season, Tulane brings back four of the team’s five starters on the offensive line (Sincere Haynesworth, Prince Pines, Josh Remetich, Rashad Green), two of the team’s top three rushers (Michael Pratt and Shaadie Clayton-Johnson), the starting quarterback (Pratt), two of the top four receivers (Jackson and Lawrence Keys III), the team’s punter (Casey Glover), the team’s kicker (Valentino Ambrosio), the team’s leader in interceptions (Jarius Monroe) and three of the five leading defensive players in tackles for loss (Patrick Jenkins, Darius Hodges and Keith Cooper Jr.).

In 2022, Tulane’s football team completed an unprecedented 12-2 campaign, culminating with an American Athletic Conference title and a 46-45 win over USC in the Cotton Bowl. At season’s end, the Green Wave finished with a ninth overall ranking, the second-highest in program history. Tulane opens the 2023 season at Yulman Stadium hosting South Alabama on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.

ABOUT THE PAUL HORNUNG AWARD

The Louisville Sports Commission successfully launched the Paul Hornung Award in 2010 to honor its namesake and native son, and to promote outstanding performances by versatile college football players who often go unnoticed. Each week during the regular season, a panel of college football experts selects players for the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll based on performance. A national selection committee comprised of 17 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award finalists and the winner, with fan voting powered by Texas Roadhouse comprising the 18th vote. Regional accounting firm Dean Dorton independently tabulates all votes.

Sixteen NCFAA members are unveiling preseason watch lists over a two-week period as the association spearheads a coordinated effort to promote each award’s preseason candidates.
