UIW leads with 16 total selections

FRISCO, Texas – Defending Southland Conference football champion UIW leads the way with 16 total selections on the league’s preseason all-conference teams, announced on Wednesday. The preseason all-conference teams are presented by B1 Patches.

Reigning FCS All-America honorees Taylor Grimes and Kelechi Anyalebechi headline the Cardinals’ contingent at wide receiver and linebacker, respectively. The reigning Southland Newcomer of the Year, Grimes led the nation with 15 touchdown receptions and ranked fourth among FCS receivers in receptions per game (7.2). A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, Anyalebechi racked up a program single-season record 130 total tackles.

Nicholls transfer Lindsey Scott Jr. occupies the first-team quarterback slot, joining UIW after he fell just 10 rushing yards shy of becoming the 15th quarterback in FCS history to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.

Southeastern garners the second-most honorees with 12 student-athletes on the teams, including a conference-best seven first-team selections. The Lions are represented by 2021 Second Team All-American cornerback Zy Alexander and defending Southland Freshman of the Year Gage Larvadain, a preseason first-team honoree at both wide receiver and kick returner.

Nicholls follows with 10 total preseason all-league nods and paces the Southland with five on the first-team offense. McNeese places eight individuals on the list, and HBU and Northwestern State round out the squads with five selections each.

The preseason poll will be revealed next Wednesday, July 20, to kick off the 2022 Southland Conference Football Media Day Presented by B1 Patches. The live event will be held at the L’Auberge Casino Resort in Lake Charles, La., and can be seen on ESPN+.

Returning all-conference selections from the previous season are automatically named to the preseason all-conference teams and may advance to higher team slots if they are vacated by non-returning players. Open positions are nominated and voted upon by the league’s head coaches.
