Southland announces 2022 Preseason All-Conference baseball team
All eight schools represented on preseason teams; Southeastern leads with eight picks
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern leads the way with eight honorees on the 2022 Southland Conference Preseason All-Conference baseball teams, announced by the league Wednesday. The preseason all-conference teams are presented by Ready®.
Among the Lions’ league-leading five first-team nods is Brennan Stuprich, who earned Southland Freshman of the Year honors in 2021 after he went 6-2 with a league-best 2.17 ERA and three complete games in 11 starts. He led the conference in innings pitched (68) and ranked second in ERA (2.12) against league competition.
Southeastern landed three on the second team, including Rhett Rosevear, who was an all-tournament pick at the 2021 Southland Conference Tournament in Hammond, La. The first-year second-baseman hit .500 (6-for-12) with three RBI and a home run in the Lions’ four tournament contests.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi followed with five honorees, including a pair of first-team selections, and New Orleans placed three of their four total picks on the top squad. The Privateers’ Kasten Furr, Pearce Howard and Caleb Seroski all return after receiving second-team all-Southland recognition in 2021.
Two-time defending conference tournament champion McNeese also garnered four spots on the all-league rosters, led by outfielder Payton Harden. The redshirt junior was named to the all-tournament squad last spring after scoring six runs in the Cowboys’ run to a second-straight trophy.
UIW earned two selections, and HBU and Nicholls each accounted for one spot on the teams.
The 2022 Southland Baseball Preseason Poll will be announced at 10 a.m. Thursday. The season opens Friday, Feb. 18 with all eight teams in action, beginning with 1 p.m. first pitch between SIU-Edwardsville and Southeastern in Hammond, America.
Southland preseason all-conference teams are nominated and voted upon by the league’s head coaches. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. Returning all-conference selections from the previous season are automatically named to the preseason teams and may be elevated to higher teams based on available positions.
