SLU Players of the Week in SLC

HAMMOND, La. – After helping Southeastern Louisiana move into a share of the Southland Conference lead, junior quarterback Cole Kelley and sophomore defensive back Ferlando Jordan were among the Southland Conference Football Players of the Week, released by the league office on Wednesday.

Additionally, Kelley was tabbed STATS FCS National Player of the Week while Jordan also became the second Lion to earn LSWA Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, along with teammate Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund, who was recognized on Sept. 16.

Kelley and Jordan are the first two Lions to earn league honors this season. Both players were integral in Southeastern’s 34-0 victory at No. 6/7 Central Arkansas that moved SLU into a four-way tie atop the league standings with UCA, Sam Houston State and Nicholls.

In his best game of his young Lion career, Kelley came off the bench to lead a Lion offensive attack that racked up 490 total yards and controlled the ball for over 38 minutes. The Lafayette, Louisiana native tied a single-game school record with four rushing touchdowns, while also completing 20-of-24 passes for 273 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Through nine games, Kelley leads the team with eight rushing touchdowns. Having completed 50-of-62 passes for 649 yards, nine touchdowns and an interception, he and fellow quarterback Chason Virgil have helped SLU rank among the national leaders in passing offense (333.9, 4th) and completion percentage (69.2, 1st).

Jordan continues to show a nose for the football, intercepting two passes and breaking up four others in the shutout win over the Bears. Jordan’s efforts were part of a defensive effort that saw SLU post its first shutout since 2009, as well as hand UCA its first shutout loss since 1995 and its first home shutout loss since 1986.

With two more picks, the Atlanta, Georgia native shares the league lead with five interceptions and is eighth in FCS in passes defended. Three of his interceptions have been taken back for touchdowns, as he holds the school record for pick sixes and is one off the national mark.
