Austin Dunlap, SLU punter

HAMMOND, La. – After an excellent performance in Saturday’s season opener at UL Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana University junior Austin Dunlap was named 2022’s first Southland Conference Player of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday.

The weekly honor was the third of Dunlap’s career. The Slidell, Louisiana native out of Northshore High School claimed league accolades twice last season.

In the No. 16/17 Lions’ 24-7 loss at UL Lafayette, Dunlap averaged 47.3 yards on his six punts. His first punt of the game was his best, covering 61 yards. His 42.0 career punting average is fourth among active FCS players.

Saturday’s trip to Lafayette was the first of two games versus FBS opponents to open the year for the Lions. SLU heads to Florida Atlantic Sept. 10 for a 5 p.m. (CST) contest that will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/1400 AM).
