Southeastern Lions wrap up second week of preseason football practice

HAMMOND, La. – The No. 17 Southeastern Louisiana University football team closed out its second week of preseason practice Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

SLU brought in referees for Saturday’s practice, giving the Lions a look at how games will be called when the season begins. Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with how his team has been able to “stack good days” as preseason practice has progressed.

“Stacking good days is all about being consistent and we’ve been able to do that,” Scelfo said. “We’re seeing the effort consistently each day. As we put our guys in more game-type situations, we’re seeing their ability to take what they’re learning in the meeting rooms and applying it to the field.

“We have a strong culture within our locker room and it’s evident by the energy we’re playing with on a daily basis,” Scelfo commented. “That starts with the players and what we’ve seen through these first 10 practices is our guys are doing a great job of holding each other accountable.”

Southeastern will practice Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m. until the first day of fall classes, set for Aug. 17. Starting with the beginning of the fall semester, SLU will practice Monday through Thursday at 3:45 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. until the week of the Sept. 3 season opener at UL Lafayette.

Southeastern opens the 2022 season at the Ragin’ Cajuns in a 6 p.m. contest. The home opener is set for Sept. 17 versus Central Connecticut State.
