HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University football team will have a wide receiver group featuring veterans in expanded roles and newcomers expected to contribute immediately.

What the receiving corps lacks in game experience, it makes up for in talent and athleticism.

“We have an untested group as far as game experience,” Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo said. “But we definitely have some talent in the room. We have some guys who have shown they’re capable of making some big plays during camp and we’re excited to see them in game action.”

Wide receivers coach Anthony Scelfo, who also serves as the pass game coordinator and recruiting coordinator, is excited about the prospects for his charges.

“We have a lot of new faces, which is exciting,” Anthony Scelfo said. “We get more comfortable every day, so we’re trending up and are only going to get better with more experience.”

Veteran Darius Lewis has been a standout among the returners this fall. A preseason All-Southland Conference selection at punt returner, Lewis is expected to be a bigger part of the offense in his second season in Hammond.

“Darius is so dynamic and he’s put in so much work this offseason,” Anthony Scelfo commented. “His physical skill set has always been there, but he’s put in the effort to raise his knowledge of the offense and understanding of coverages. He’s a guy who can make things happen with the ball in his hands.”

Several newcomers have flashed the abilities to have an immediate impact in the passing game.

“We signed a really good freshmen wide receiver class,” Anthony Scelfo stated. “Mike Williams can really run and is always working to get better, so we’ve been impressed with his mentality. Everything Jaylon Domingeaux does, he does full speed. He plays violently and fast. Those two guys have already started to catch their footing in our system and we’re excited where they can take their games as the season unfolds.

“Tristan Goodly and Clayton Lonardo are two other freshmen who continue to get better,” Anthony Scelfo continued. “From a transfer standpoint, Xavier Hill is a big, physical guy that we think can be a big-time playmaker for us.”

Anthony Scelfo also touted his group’s versatility.

“We have a little bit of everything in our room, so our guys compliment each other very well,” Scelfo said. “Darius, Mike and Corey Lorio are savvy guys, while Xavier, Jaylon and Marcellus Johnson give us a big physical presence. We’re only going to get better as we continue to play together and gel with our quarterbacks. I’m pleased with where we are now and excited to see where we can go.”

The Lions will return to the practice field Friday at 9 a.m. The week’s practice schedule culminates Saturday with the Season Ticket Pickup Party, set for 10 a.m. in conjunction with SLU’s final practice before entering game week.
