HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana Athletics announced the four former student-athletes that will make up the 2020 SLU Athletics Hall of Fame Class on Wednesday.

The newest Hall of Famers include Matt Carvell (golf), Maiya Cooper (soccer), Brock Hebert (baseball) and Adonson Shallow (track and field). The quartet will be honored in a private ceremony on Oct. 10 before being recognized at halftime of the Lion football team’s Southland Conference contest versus Northwestern State that evening.

Carvell will be the fourth former golfer to earn induction into the Hall of Fame, joining Jacques Chevalier (2016), Martin du Toit (2007) and Andy Smith (2010). Cooper is the eighth former soccer student-athlete to earn Hall of Fame induction and the first since Kari Yost in 2017.

Hebert’s induction is the 21st for the baseball program and marks the second straight year a former Lion baseball player has received recognition, as Stefan Lopez was part of the 2019 class. Shallow is the first track inductee since Chris Carter in 2013 and the 22nd alumni of the SLU track program to receive the honor.

Carvell was a consistent performer for the Lion golf team from 2005-09, earning second team All-Southland Conference honors all four seasons. The Johannesburg, South Africa native was also an excellent performer in the classroom, earning Cleveland Golf/Srixon Academic All-America and Southland All-Academic accolades each of his final two seasons.

A three-time All-Louisiana selection, Carvell helped the Lions to an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Regional before participating as an individual in the 2009 NCAA Regional. In the fall of his senior season, Carvell tied a national record, becoming the seventh collegiate player in history to record a round of 60, carding the course-record score in the first round of the Aldila/Scenic City Invitational.

Cooper was one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the Lady Lion soccer program, ranking second all-time with 47 career goals from 2009-12. A four-time first team All-Southland Conference and first team All-Louisiana selection, she is the only three-time All-Region performer in program history.

The Hawthorne, California native led Southeastern in scoring in each of her four seasons and is the only player in school history with 10 or more goals in four different seasons. The 2009 Louisiana Freshman of the Year was part of the first SLU team to advance to the NCAA Tournament and scored a goal in the Lady Lions’ first-round loss at Florida State. Cooper was named the 2011-12 SLU Female Athlete of the Year.

The 2011-12 SLU Male Athlete of the Year was Hebert, who starred on the diamond for the Lions from 2010-12. The Bourg, Louisiana native was a consensus All-American, as well as the Southland Conference Player and Hitter of the Year in his final season. A 14th round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the Major League Baseball draft, Hebert led the Southland with a .374 batting average, 58 runs and 36 stolen bases.

Hebert was twice named to the All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana teams. The standout second baseman finished his Southeastern career in the program’s top 10 with 150 runs, 45 doubles, 213 hits and 70 stolen bases.

Shallow rounds out the 2020 class after twice earning All-American honors during his Lion career that spanned from 2009-11. A native of Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, he was named the South Central Region and Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Year after winning league titles in the hammer throw, shot put and discus.

The 2009-10 SLU Male Athlete of the Year was named the Outstanding Field Athlete at both the 2009 and 2010 Southland Conference Indoor Championships, winning the weight throw at both meets and the shot put at the 2010 league competition. Shallow was also the first male in school history to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing third at the 2011 national meet in the weight throw, after finishing fourth nationally in the previous year’s outdoor meet.

Shallow was an immediate impact performer after transferring from Central Arizona College, earning 2009 Southland Newcomer of the Year accolades. He still holds school records in the indoor (60-02.04) and outdoor (60-11.25) shot put, as well as the outdoor program record in the discus (196-01).
