NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore reliever Morgan Sauber pitched 6.2 innings of closing relief, yielding just 3 hits while striking out 8, as Delgado Community College captured Sunday afternoon’s conference matchup with Nunez Community College by a score of 7-1 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Sauber, who had also pitched a couple of effective shutout innings in Saturday’s series opener won by Nunez, kept the Pelican batters off-balance during his entire stint, effectively mixing his fastball with a sharp breaking pitch.

The Dolphins opened the scoring with 3 runs in the bottom of the second inning as they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and single, with another walk followed by a hit-batter forcing in the first 2 runs, with the third next scoring on Christian Westcott’s pop single into short right field.

The Pels were able to score their only run of the contest in the top of the third as Ben Harris drew a one-out walk which was followed by line singles to left from Noah Detillier and Cohen Veron to fill the sacks. Evan Rohlfs was then plunked to force in the run and leave the bases still loaded. Sauber was summoned into the game at this point and proceeded to pitch the Dolphins out of further trouble on a foul pop-up and inning-ending strikeout.

Delgado extended the lead to 6-1 with 3 more in the fourth on a pair of walks followed by 3 singles. The home team then got their final run in the seventh as Josh Eames opened with a walk and moved around on a stolen base, groundout, and Walker Bazile’s 2-out single.

Kylin Broussard pitched the final 4.1 innings for Nunez, giving up just 2 hits and that final lone run.

Detillier led the Pels at the plate with 3 singles in four at-bats. Westcott led DCC offensively, going 2-for-3 with 2 walks and 3 RBI’s.
