Sam Landry collects Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors

Controlled McNeese and South Alabama bats during Louisiana’s undefeated week

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball pitcher Sam Landry has been named the Sun Belt Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday (March 19, 2024).

Landry worked 19-1/3 innings in the circle limiting foes to eight hits and yielding just three earned runs as she directed Louisiana to a 4-0 win capped off by a Sun Belt series sweep on the road at South Alabama.

Her week was headlined by carrying one-hit shutouts into the seventh inning of Wednesday’s midweek win over McNeese and the USA series opener. Landry started the week with 12-1/3 innings consecutive innings pitched without an earned run allowed.

In the USA series opener, Landry forced the Jags into 11 ground ball outs, induced two ground ball double plays and had faced only two batters over the minimum in tossing a shutout prior to play being suspended on Friday evening.

She closed the week with a key relief effort in the series finale in Mobile, taking over in the fourth and keeping the Jags scoreless including stranding a runner who had reached third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh to set up extra innings. Landry allowed just two hits to the 13 batters she faced while holding the Jags in check until Jourdyn Campbell’s heroics arrived.

The results of the week increased Landry’s personal win streak to eight games as she improved to 9-5 on the season. The junior right-handed pitcher from Mont Belvieu, Texas moved to 21-1 in her career in SBC play and moved within two wins of her 50th career victory overall (career overall record now stands at 48-14).

Louisiana, which has received at least one SBC Player and Pitcher of the Week award since the inception of the league in 2000, now owns 98 Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week awards in program history.

For Landry (9-5, 2.12 ERA), she collected her first SBC Pitcher of the Week award of the 2024 season and the fifth overall in her career.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (18-12, 3-0 SBC), winners of nine straight games, travel to Ruston, Louisiana on Wednesday, March 20 for a midweek game at Louisiana Tech (19-5) that’s scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. from Dr. Billy Bundrick Field live on ESPN+.

The Sun Belt Conference home opener at Lamson Park follows the trip to Ruston, with the Cajuns hosting Coastal Carolina (18-10, 1-2 SBC) from Friday-Sunday, March 22-24.
