Rowbury’s Season High Not Enough Against Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team saw Brody Rowbury go off for a new season high, but a barrage of three-pointers by Vanderbilt was too much for the Lions to handle in a 93-55 loss to the Commodores Friday night at the Memorial Gymnasium.

The Lions enjoyed some early success as a fadeaway by Rowbury and a lay-up by Boogie Anderson gave Southeastern an early 4-2 lead. After a Commodore made three-pointer, another Anderson lay-up put SLU back on top 6-5. However, Vanderbilt scored the next seven to take the lead for good. The Lions would cut that deficit down to two points at 12-10 on a Nick Caldwell lay-up, but an 11-2 Commodore run gave Vanderbilt its first double-digit lead of the game. From there, the SLU deficit opened to the half where Southeastern trailed by 24 points at 47-23. The second half started with Vanderbilt scoring the first five points and the Commodores pulled away further from there.

Rowbury scored on seven of his 11 shot attempts and was four of six at the free throw line to finish with a game-high 18 points, a new season high for the true freshman from Meridian High in Idaho. He also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lions on the boards while dishing out a pair of assists and collecting a steal. Anderson also filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

It was a tough shooting night for the Lions as SLU hit 33.9% from the field in the contest, but struggled mightily from above the arc, hitting just one of 19 attempts from three. Vanderbilt finished at 47.9% from the field and was just as good from three, hitting 14 of their 37 attempts from distance.

The Lions (6-8, 0-1 SLC) head into Southland Conference play for the remainder of the season, starting on Thurs., Jan. 5th at home against Houston Christian. Tip-off of Thursday’s game against the Huskies (3-10, 0-0 SLC) is set for 3:30 P.M., or about 30 minutes following the end of the women’s game, at the University Center. The first 300 Southeastern student in attendance will get a free long sleeve SLU shirt.
