BOUTTE – The Hahnville-Destrehan rivalry has been a staple for St. Charles Parish and the state of Louisiana since both schools were opened.

The rivalry returned to the diamond Tuesday Afternoon. Destrehan had already clinched the District 7-A title, looking to extend an 11-game winning streak. Hahnville was playing with nothing to lose and a chance to gain better position in the state power ratings.

Both teams went at it in an absolutely classic baseball game. Tied at 1-1 going to the bottom of the seventh, Hahnville took advantage of the last at bat.

Sam Simoneaux hit a double to left field then wound up 90 feet away from winning the ballgame. Destehan pitcher Jayse Degruy threw a wild pitch in the dirt and Simoneaux scored the winning run to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Tigers pitcher Talan Theriot’s errant throw scored John Carmichael giving Destrehan a 1-0 lead.

Hahnville (18-11, 4-2) rallied in the sixth inning. Jaden Rosales came through an RBI single to score Aidan Machado, tying the game 1-1.

Destrehan (21-9, 5-1) had a shot to retake the lead in the seventh inning but Theriot came up big on the mound with two straight strikeouts before ctcher Kason Alexander gunned down a runner at second base.

Both Theriot and Wildcats pitcher Brycen Harding had outstanding performances. Theriot (3-3) earned the complete game win with 11 strikeouts. Harding pitched five innings finishing with eight strikeouts.

“When the guys around you don’t bow their head, you know that you got to keep going,” said Theriot. “It’s a great thing but we played it like it’s a regular game.”

Hahnville finished with seven hits. Machado led the Tigers with three hits. Rosales has two hits and an RBI.

“Every single pitch, go after it and play for each other. Be happy for the guy next to you,” said Hahnville head coach Jared Vial. “We showed that today and the baseball gods reward you at the end. When you play the game right, that’s what happens.”

Destrehan managed five hits. Degruy and Hubbard led the Wildcats with two hits each.

“Credit goes to them (Hahnville). They got big bats when they need it down the stretch,” said Destrehan Head Coach Chris Mire. “Every time we had the chance, Talan Theriot stepped up and made big pitches. We been playing close games on the road but we got to be better on our end.”

Hahnville enjoyed some payback after getting swept by Destrehan last season. Both teams will go at it again in a non-district rematch at Destrehan this Thursday afternoon.
