METAIRIE, La. – The Country Day Cajuns were pushed to the brink in the third set but held firm for a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 27-25) victory over the Sacred Heart Cardinals on Tuesday evening at Country Day.

Ellie Schneider and Jane Gambel combined for a big finish to the match. With the Cajuns trailing 25-24 and facing a set point that would have extended the match, Gambel came up with two big kills to get Country Day a fourth look at match point.

Schneider, who had seven kills in the final set ended the match with the final of those kills to seal the victory for the Cajuns, who are No. 1 in the LHSAA Division I power ratings.

Sacred Heart’s combination of Gigi Gibbens and Mary Caroline Mazzanti helped keep the Cardinals in front for most of the early portion of the third set with nine combined kills. Cami Davis also had two kills and two blocks in the final set but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cajuns’ balanced attack.

The Cardinals are No. 6 in the current LHSAA Division IV power ratings.

Gigi Dazet helped set the tone in the opening set with six kills as the Cajuns were able to gain an early advantage that they never relented from. The second set saw Country Day build a lead as large as the final margin (10) when they were ahead 19-9.

Country Day also got a service ace each from Elise Wright, Olivia Prout and Evelyn Rivas. In the final set, Lia Beverly also had a couple of crucial off-speed kills and had four total in the set.
