Ragin’ Cajuns hire Casey Perrin as men’s basketball assistant coach

California native and former Longhorns Ops Director fills out Ragin’ Cajuns staff

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Marlin filled out his 2022-23 coaching staff after announcing the addition of Casey Perrin as an assistant coach.

Perrin, a native of Riverside, Calif., spent the 2021-22 season as the Men’s Basketball Director of Operations at the University of Texas under head coach Chris Beard after working the previous five seasons on Beard’s staff at Texas Tech.

“We were excited to add Casey to our staff this summer from The University of Texas,” Marlin said. “He is a successful young coach who brings championship experience to our program. He impacts winning and has already made a difference with our players.”

While in Lubbock, Perrin served as Chief of Staff during the 2020-21 season after working for the previous four years as a graduate manager.

In his stint at UT, Perrin was part of a Longhorn squad which finished 22-12 overall and reached the second round of the NCAA Championships. The Longhorns claimed three wins during the season over nationally-ranked teams, highlighted by a 79-76 victory over eventual national champion Kansas.

During Perrin’s five years with Beard at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders posted five straight winning seasons and an overall record of 112-55 (.671), including an impressive 9-3 mark in NCAA Tournament contests. Prior to Beard’s arrival, the program was coming off five losing seasons in the six previous years. Texas Tech advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history in 2018 and returned the following season with a trip to the 2019 National Championship Game, which included a school-best 31 victories. After the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, the Red Raiders advanced to the 2021 NCAA Tournament Second Round.

Texas Tech registered a 74-13 mark in home games at the United Supermarkets Arena in this five-year stretch, including a 33-12 record in Big 12 contests. Keenan Evans (2018 consensus second team) and Jarrett Culver (2019 consensus second team) each earned All-America honors, and Texas Tech produced a total of 13 All-Big 12 selections and 21 Academic All-Big 12 honorees during the past five years.

Three Texas Tech players were selected in the NBA Draft during this five-year span. Zhaire Smith became the second NBA Draft first-round pick in program history, when he was selected No. 16 overall by the Phoenix Suns (traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on draft night). Jarrett Culver was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Jahmi’us Ramsey was selected No. 43 overall in the 2020 Draft by the Sacramento Kings.

Perrin played four years (2012-16) at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. A Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll selection as a senior, Perrin earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education. He received his master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas Tech University in 2018.

Perrin earned honorable mention all-state accolades by ArizonaVarsity.com in addition to all-region and all-conference recognition as a senior in 2010-11 at Cactus Shadows High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., averaging 16 points and six assists per contest. He then attended Maine Central Institute (Pittsfield, Maine) in 2011-12 and averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 assists per game.
