MOBILE, AL — Sophomore Landon Cortez pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout, and his offense supported him with 29 runs on 24 hits over 7 innings, as Nunez Community College won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader against the Spring Hill College Junior Varsity Monday afternoon at Sims-Galle Field.

Later in Game 2, freshman reliever Charlie Guidry got the start on the mound, going 5.2 innings and yielding just 3 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 8, as the Pelicans completed the sweep with a 10-4 victory.

GAME 1 – NUNEZ 29, SPRING HILL 0 (7 innings)

Cortez pitched the third complete-game shutout of his college career, all coming in successive mound appearances in the City of Mobile dating back to last season, giving him 21 straight scoreless innings in the port city. In addition, those three masterpieces are three of only five such gems in team history.

The Pelican offense scored in every inning, including a 12-run frame, as the bats came alive on a warm Spring afternoon on the Spring Hill campus.

Colin Cure drove in the first two runs with a first-inning double, and the hit parade was off and running. Cure later added a second double and a triple to cap off a 3-for-7 outing with 7 RBIs.

Noah Detillier went 6-for-6, including a pair of doubles, along with a 7th inning grand-slam homer that accounted for the final Nunez tallies in the 6-run frame. It was the third consecutive game at Sims-Galle Field, dating back to 2023, in which Detillier has gone deep and capped off a 6-run, 6-RBI contest for the Lutcher product.

Sophomore Roth John added 3 singles, a double, and a triple in six plate appearances, also scoring 3 runs and driving in four. His triple capped off the 12-run third inning, which also included Cure’s 3-bagger.

Ben Harris crossed the plate 5 times after reaching base on 2 singles, a double, and a hit-by-pitch, and A.J. Bailey added a single and double in 3 trips to the plate.

Reggie Bergeron went 2-for-3, with his 2-run homer that stretched over the left-field wall being the big blow in the Pels’ 3-run fifth.

Cortez struck out seven in the contest, with Enrique Barazza’s clean single in the fourth inning accounting for the only hit allowed.

GAME 2 – NUNEZ 10, SPRING HILL 4 (7 innings)

In the evening nightcap, the Pels jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first as Dorien Jackson led off with a walk and Harris followed with a sharp single to left. After the runners each advanced on a double steal, Detillier plated Jackson with his first of two sacrifice flies in the game, with Harris next scoring on Cohen Veron’s line single to left. John then doubled to the wall in center to send Veron home and stake Guidry to a 3-0 lead before he even picked up a game ball.

Nunez then added 2 more in the second on a pair of walks and singles from Harris and Veron.

The Pelicans closed out their scoring with 5 in the third before going scoreless for the rest of the contest. In the inning, a pair of walks around singles by James Bendeck and Harris, and Detillier’s second sac fly gave Nunez a 7-0 lead before John cleared the bases with his second triple of the day, this one a towering shot to the 403-sign in straightaway center.

The Badgers finally got on the board with 2 in the bottom of the third after a pair of walks, followed by Preston Hall’s double and a groundout. The home team then got two unearned runs in the sixth on a 2-base infield error, Blake Garland’s double, and James Saxon’s single.

Guidry left the game in the sixth inning after reaching his pitch limit, being relieved by Casey Bryant who closed out the game in a non-save situation, ending the contest with a strikeout.
