Nicholls’ Ty Gordon repeats as Southland Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Fifth-year guard extends 20-point scoring streak to five games
FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Ty Gordon is the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Weekly awards are presented by GEICO.
The fifth-year guard has topped 20 points in five-straight games and each of his last six starts, upping his league-best scoring average to 19.9 points per game. Gordon recorded game-highs in a win over Blue Mountain College on Monday (27) and a three-point loss at Big Ten power Wisconsin on Wednesday (26) and added 22 points in a dominant win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.
The Colonels (8-4) hit the road again for a matchup with Oregon State at 10 p.m. CT Tuesday in Corvallis, Ore. Nicholls is looking to become the first Southland member to defeat a Pac-12 opponent since Central Arkansas defeated California, 96-69, on Dec. 6, 2017.
Men’s Basketball Player of the Week – Ty Gordon, Nicholls – Graduate Student – Guard – Tunica, Miss.
Gordon got off to a hot start in a three-game week, registering a game-high 27 points in the 87-69 win over Blue Mountain College. He set or matched his season bests in field-goals made (10), three-pointers made (seven), rebounds (six) and assists (five). The two-time defending Player of the Week carried that momentum into a clash with the Badgers, pouring in a game-high 26 points on 10 made field-goals, his third-straight game with double-digit baskets.
Gordon helped the team to a double-digit lead in the second half, hitting a jumper in the opening minutes to give the Colonels their largest lead at 12. His last three-pointer made it a two-point game with nine ticks remaining, but he could not connect on a potential game-tying shot in the final seconds. Gordon finished out the week with 22 points in a 104-73 win over Mississippi Valley, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Over his last six starts, Gordon is averaging 24.8 points on 50 percent shooting. He has connected on 46.3 percent of his long-range attempts with a rate of 5.2 threes made per game. This marks his third weekly award of the season and the fifth of his career.
