Chelsea Cain

Following new career highs in back-to-back games, Nicholls State University women’s basketball sophomore Chelsea Cain earned two weekly honors as the forward was named Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The honors are the first of the season for the Colonels and the first for Cain in her career.

Cain was outstanding in the two games for Nicholls, averaging a double-double with 27.5 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting 52.9 percent from the field. She recorded back-to-back double-doubles in the two games and set new career highs in scoring in each outing.

A native of Prairieville, Louisiana, Cain closed out the year with a 26-point, 11-rebound game at Alabama A&M and followed up with 29 points and 13 rebounds – both career bests – in the 89-82 victory over Sam Houston State. Her performance against the Bearkats was fueled by a 13-for-13 day at the free throw line, which tied the program record for second most made without a miss.

Dating back to last season, the win was the eighth consecutive Southland Conference victory for the Colonels. The team is back in action Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Lamar University.
