Former Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter were among nine killed Sunday in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

“The NBA family is devastated by the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant, and his daughter, Gianna,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. “For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning. He was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are legendary.”

The New Orleans Pelicans issued the following statement today regarding the passing of Bryant:

“The New Orleans Pelicans join the basketball world in mourning the tragic passing of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. Kobe’s transcendent performance on the court and fierce competitiveness inspired millions of fans around the world. We will always remember him as one of the game’s greatest players and his legacy as a global ambassador of the league will live on forever.

The Pelicans organization sends our deepest condolences to his wife, Vanessa, their family and the Lakers organization.”

The 41-year old Bryant and his daughter were headed to her basketball practice when the tragedy occurred. There were no survivors. Bryant was a five-time NBA champion and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist with Team USA. He was already elected to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame later this year.
