After four straight trips to the LHSAA Basketball Tournament and consecutive state championships, George Washington Carver head basketball coach Nate Roche is stepping down from the post— but moving up.

The L.B. Landry graduate has been named Director of Athletics over all programs at Collegiate Academies.

The charter network is comprised of five high schools, Carver, Abramson Sci Academy, Livingston Collegiate Academy, Walter L. Cohen, Collegiate Baton Rouge and two post-high school programs.

Devin Andrew, Roche’s assistant for three years and a former player at Xavier University of Louisiana, will take over as Rams head coach.

“The reason why I got an education was to help kids. I feel like this new position will give me the opportunity to help even more kids,” said Roche, a Belhaven College alum.

The Rams entered the Division II Select playoffs as the number six seed this past March and took the difficult route to the championship, disposing the state’s top three seeds. Carver eliminated third-seeded Archbishop Hannan and second-seeded Peabody before downing top-seeded Madison Prep in the state final, 34-25.

Under Roche’s direction, Carver won the Class 4A state crown in 2022 by defeating district rival McMain in the final, 66-31.

Earlier this week, Roche’s 2023 Carver team was named the Allstate Sugar Bowl’s Outstanding Boys’ Prep Team from Greater New Orleans.
