DEONTA MCMAHON

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese senior running back Deonta McMahon has been voted as this week’s Louisiana Sportswriters Association Offensive Player of the Week, the organization announced on Monday.

McMahon scored three touchdowns in McNeese’s 28-27 loss to Southeastern on Saturday night while rushing for 97 yards and totaling 106 offensive yards. He scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards and also on a 5-yard reception.

The third-year starter in the offensive backfield continues to put up the best numbers in his career.

He’s currently leading the Southland Conference in total rushing yards (761), rushing yards per game (95.1), rushing yards per carry (6.5), and is second in the conference in rushing touchdowns (9) and total touchdowns scored (11).

McMahon is looking to become the first Cowboy to lead the conference in rushing since the 2008 season (Toddrick Penland) while closing in on the first 1,000-yard rusher for McNeese since the 2013 season (Marcus Wiltz).

In his career, McMahon has rushed for 1,508 yards, ranking him 26th on the school’s all-time list. He’s also scored 18 rushing and 20 total TDs. He’s scored seven TDs (5 rushing, 2 receiving) the last two games.

He’ll look to add to those numbers this Saturday when McNeese steps out of conference to host Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. in Cowboy Stadium.
