LAKE CHARLES – First year McNeese football head coach Gary Goff met with the media on Wednesday afternoon to officially discuss his 2022 signing class, one that was heavy with offensive and defensive linemen.

“It’s an exciting day, but that’s every coach right now on this day,” said Goff who he and his staff had about eight days to sign the 13 players on the day to bring the total class number to 22. “We signed a great group of young men that we hope will be with us for a long time. I really want to thank my staff. They did a great job. We only had about two weeks. We were on the road for eight days then get back every Thursday night and get ready for the recruiting weekend.

“For us to get the caliber of athletes to come here speaks volumes for this staff.”

The Cowboys signed six offensive linemen, three defensive linemen, three linebackers, five defensive backs, two running backs, a quarterback, tight end and kicker. Twelve of the 22 call Louisiana home, four from Florida, three hail from Texas and one each from Mississippi, Georgia and Colorado.

McNeese picked up five transfers during the mid-year period – quarterback Knox Kadum from Virginia Tech, defensive back Jermaine McMillian from Central Florida, defensive back Tyler Barnes from Southern Miss, offensive lineman Richard Leclair of Valdosta State, and kicker C.J. Moya from Hutchinson Community College.

“It was nice to get the mid-years signed right off the bat,” said Goff.

All players signed on Wednesday are from the high school ranks, including four offensive linemen to bring the total number signed to six and a unit that averages 6-foot-5, 305 pounds.

“It’s a good mixture of players from all areas,” said Goff. “It’s hard for us to sit here and decide exactly on what we need to improve on since we haven’t taken one snap with the guys on the field. It’s like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. We have a good team here but we need to add more pieces to that. After spring ball we’ll have a better idea of some areas that need improvement.”

Goff said he has held on to several scholarships in case he needs to seek some transfers out of the portal.

“We have four if we need to dip into the portal,” said Goff. “We signed a good bit of high school players that we’ll develop and be really good players for us. A few of them might contribute early.”

The largest of the offensive linemen is Austin Cowart of South Sumter High School in Webster, Florida. Cowart stands 6-5 and weighs 335. Hayes Creel out of St. Paul’s HS in Mt. Herman, is 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds. Greg Knox III (6-6, 305) was highly recruited by all Southland Conference schools, and after narrowing his list to three, chose McNeese over Southeastern and Grambling. Jayden Davis is a 6-4, 280-pound lineman who played tackle for West Brook HS in Beaumont. Richard Leclair transferred from Valdosta State where the 6-3, 297-pounder helped the Blazers to the Division II title game. The Cowboys signed local product Jayln Easton (6-5, 295) from Lake Charles College Prep back in the early signing period in December.

McNeese loaded back up on defensive back talent with five signees after several of would-be returners opted to test the NCAA portal.

McMillian will help bring experience to a group that includes returners Corione Harris, Trent Winbush, Rae’kwon Starks, Enos Lewis, Alijah Hamilton, and Twillie Lovett, among others.

Quarterback Kadum will join a group that will bring a lot of competitiveness to a position that hasn’t seen a different starter behind center since the 2017 season with returners Cade Bartlett, Devon Tott, Dillon Simon and Walker Wood, who could play quarterback or stay at receiver if needed.
