HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men’s basketball team scored a season-high 91 points in a 91-70 win over Nicholls Saturday afternoon at the University Center.

Southeastern (9-13, 5-4 Southland) was led by Senior Moses Greenwood with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. The Sharon, Mississippi native passed Patrick Sullivan for 10th all-time in SLU scoring history and is tied for ninth with Amir-Abdur-Rahim with 1,282 career points.

Senior Marlain Veal added 13 points and nine assists. The New Orleans, Louisiana native is the all-time program leader in assists and steals and is third in all-time program scoring (1,499 points). Von Julien added 10 points and seven assists.

“I thought we had two really good days of preparation and good teams will always bounce back from a loss (to Sam Houston),” said fifth-year SLU head coach Jay Ladner. “But the key to tonight was how well we started the game defensively to set a tone and forced them to take some tough shots which allowed us to get out in transition and play better offensively. I don’t think that we sustained the defense like I would have liked but were really unselfish with the basketball on the offensive end.”

Nicholls (10-11, 3-5 Southland) was paced by Danny Garrick with 17 points on five three-pointers while Jeremiah Jefferson added 15.

SLU jumped out to a 38-19 lead with 6:21 to go in the first half before the Colonels cut into the lead. The Lions led 43-31 at halftime.

Nichols hung around for much of the second half trailing, 74-64, with 6:01 remaining. Southeastern, however, put the game on ice going on a 10-2 run to take an 84-66 lead with 3:43 to go, cruising to the win.

The Lions outrebounded the Colonels 37-24 including 14 offensive rebounds despite not having Ty Brewer or Pape Diop due to injuries. SLU has outrebounded opponents in Southland games 279-219.

“I was proud of the collective effort tonight on the glass,” said Ladner. “We were really kind of limited tonight without Pape and Ty and I thought everybody did a good job of crashing the glass all night long.”

SLU had 34 field goals on 25 assists and just 13 turnovers. The Lions have racked up 100 assists on 143 field goals in the last six games.

“That’s where we need to be on a nightly basis,” said Ladner. “Anytime we can be around two or two and a half to one assists-to-turnovers then I like our chances.”

SLU will hit the road next week to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-11, 4-3 Southland) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Corpus Christi, Texas before traveling to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Arkansas (10-12, 5-4 Southland) Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Both games will be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive and via the Lions Game Day Experience, TuneIn Radio and RadioFX apps.
