Lady Lions fall to UIW 55-49

SAN ANTONIO, TX. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team fell to the Lady Cardinals, 55-49.

Southeastern (8-6, 3-2 SLC) dropped the conference tilt to UIW (7-8, 2-3 SLC) after a hard-fought defensive battle. Hailey Giaratano led the Lady Lions with 13 points while Chrissy Brown trailed behind with 11 and Alexius Horne also led with 10. Brown also hit her fourth double-double of the season, leading with 12 rebounds.

The game began with a tipoff in Southeastern’s favor, but was turned over by Jen Pierre within the first minute of the game. The ball would be turned over multiple times before the first two points were made with a layup by UIW’s Myra Bell. Cierra Cunningham’s jumper would be good with a better half of the first quarter expired. She would be answered with a UIW Bell three-pointer and an assist from Nina De Leon Negron. At the 2:33 mark, Giaratano was able to get her first points in the game on the board with a three-pointer and an assist by Cunningham. UIW would continue with the three-pointers making three of six.

The second quarter would also go the way of the Lady Cardinals as they would have a total of four three-point attempts and three completions. Southeastern would go 0-5 on three pointers. The Lady Lions would struggle with field goals as they would shoot 33.3% from the floor, with six completions and 18 attempts. Southeastern would be able to make a score run as Taylor Bell, Giaratano and Kelly were able to put points on the board, closing in the point gap by eight, 30-22 before the end of the half.

The second half started with a heavy 41-26 lead against the Lady Lions as Jorja Elliott would add two more three-pointers as she would be 6-6. Brown and Kelly were both able to get in a layup within the first four minutes. Brown and Giaratano would end the quarter with a jump-shot each.

Kelly would block the first shot of the fourth period with Giaratano getting the defensive rebound. UIW would come back and take the ball for a layup by Aliyah Collins. At 6:06, Brown was able to hit double digits with a layup, securing her fourth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 10 points during the game. Horne would come back in the last four minutes of the game and hit a jumper with an assist from Brown. Southeastern would be able to cut the lead down to five points after a three-pointer by Horne but it wouldn’t be enough as Southeastern would become 3-2 in Southland Conference play with a 55-49 loss against the Lady Cardinals.

Next up for the Lady Lions will be facing the Lady Demons Thursday Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. in Hammond, Louisiana. The game will be livestreamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be accessed on www.LionSports.net
