Lady Lions coast past Southern-New Orleans

HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team got by Southern-New Orleans with a stellar 90-30-win Tuesday evening at the Pride Roofing University Center.

Southeastern (2-1) came out flat to start the game, but held Southern-New Orleans (0-5) to only 15 points for the first half of the ballgame. The Lady Lions finished the second quarter with a 22-4 advantage over the Knights led by junior center Cheyanne Daniels and freshman guard Avari Berry.

Daniels continued with another outstanding performance of 17 points in the paint and two blocks. The Knights had no answer for the Shawnee Community College transfer as Southeastern had the upper hand in points in the paint. Avari Berry contributed 17 points off the bench to tie in leading scorers with five rebounds and four steals. Berry had a solid performance showcasing her ability to step up in the point guard position.

The Knights held a short lead in the beginning of the game that ignited a spark in the first quarter. Jordan Harris led the team with nine points and four rebounds to finish out the game.

SLU came out with energy in the second half with a 23-point run midway in the third quarter. The Lady Lions added another 26 points in the fourth quarter to gain a 60-point advantage and seal the deal over the Knights.

Hailey Giaratano added double-digit scoring against Southern-New Orleans with 14 points and five rebounds. Giaratano and Dijone Flowers both ended the night with six assists. Sophomore guard Allasia Washington made an impact with 10 points along with senior Daija Harvey who scored nine points shooting 60.0 percent from the three-point line.

The Lady Lions will return to action at home to take on the reigning National Champion LSU at 7 p.m. Nov. 17. Fans suit up in white in support of SLU as the Southland Champions host the National Champions Friday evening. Friday’s game will also honor senior guard Alexius Horne as the Spotlight Player.
