LA Tech drops opener 8-2 at Southern Miss

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech drops their first Friday night game of the year 8-2 to Southern Miss at Pete Taylor Park, Hill Denson Field.

LA Tech (18-8, 5-2 C-USA) falls to Southern Miss (18-7, 6-1 C-USA) on Friday night. Five Golden Eagle hitters recorded multi-hit games while also belting three home runs as a squad. Right-hander Tanner Hall earned the win moving to 4-0 on the year after tossing 8 innings allowing no earned runs, no walks and striking out 11.

Jonathan Fincher gets the loss making it the first of the season. The left-hander was tagged for five earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

Ryan Harland was dominant in relief once again, ultimately keeping the Bulldogs in the game. The freshman went 3.1 strong innings of relief allowing just one hit, no earned runs, one walk and two punch outs.

Taylor Young and Logan McLeod combined for four of the seven Bulldog base hits. Adarius Myers with the lone extra base-hit with a double down the left field line in the seventh.

Southern Miss jumped out on top in the first inning from a two-run blast to left field by Reece Ewing, his sixth of the year. The Golden Eagles scored one more in the second from a Will McGillis solo homer to take a 3-0 lead. The veteran leadoff hitter Gabe Montenegro collected two RBI on the night on a two-out base knock in the fourth.

Philip Matulia grounded out scoring Taylor Young in the sixth and Adarius Myers came home on a passed ball in the seventh for the only two Bulldog runs.

Southern Miss scored three more in the eighth on a two-run shot from Carson Paetow and a sac-fly from Dustin Dickerson, making it 8-2.
