Kimbrough sets career-high as Privateers defeat Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Jayla Kimbrough scored a career-high 25 points and the New Orleans Privateers took control of the game late in the second quarter on their way to an 80-57 victory over the Northwestern State Lady Demons on Thursday at Prather Coliseum.

Kimbrough was 11-of-16 from the field and landed one rebound shy of a double-double as she snagged nine boards in just over 35 minutes of play.

The Lady Demons began the game on an 11-4 run through the first four minutes. The Privateers settled in from there though and responded with a run of their own. New Orleans scored 13 of the next 15 points to take the lead. The privateers were up by two after an eventful first quarter in which the two teams combined to shoot 50 percent from the field.

The Privateers owned the second quarter which was led by Kimbrough and DeArica Pryor. The pair combined for 14 points in the first quarter and followed it up with 15 combined in the second. Meanwhile, New Orleans shot 54.8 percent as a team in the first half and forced 14 Lady Demon turnovers.

When the two teams went to the locker room, it was the Privateers who led 41-28. The second half didn’t change matters as the Privateers continued to have their way in the paint. New Orleans outscored Northwestern State 58-28 in the paint on the night.

The Privateers also forced 26 Northwestern State turnovers and shot just over 53 percent from the field on the night.

INSIDE THE BOX

Pryor finished with 22 points, four assists and five rebounds. Nora Francois also got into double figures with 11 points. Seven of those came in the third quarter. Zoe Cooper had seven points and four rebounds. New Orleans had 13 steals on the night. Justice Ross led that category individually with four.

Northwestern State was paced by Karmelah Dean’s 22 points. Jenny Ntambwe finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Privateers will head to Commerce to face the A&M-Commerce Lions on Saturday.
