LAFAYETTE – After helping their respective teams to unbeaten weeks on the hardwood, Louisiana’s Joe Charles and Tulane’s Amira Mabry were named as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) College Basketball Players of the Week, in an announcement by the organization on Monday.

The duo was honored after being nominated by their respective basketball sports information directors and selected by a statewide panel of media members.

Charles earned LSWA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after sharing the award with LSU’s Jordan Wright on January 8. Mabry was named as the LSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and became the fourth member of the Tulane squad to earn weekly honors joining teammates Kyren Whittington (December 11), Marta Galic (January 2) and Hannah Pratt (January 16).

JOE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – Junior, Forward, Carencro, La.

Charles posted a pair of double-doubles last week, averaging 17.5 points and 13.0 rebounds as Louisiana (15-8, 8-3 SBC) ran its winning streak to seven games.

In Wednesday’s 80-72 Sun Belt Conference victory over ULM, Charles scored 19 points, draining a career-best five 3-pointers, while grabbing 11 rebounds and collecting three steals.

The Carencro, Louisiana native followed that with a 16-point, 15-rebound performance – his ninth double-double of the season – in an 80-60 win over South Alabama. Charles added four steals in the win.

Charles continues to lead the SBC in rebounds at 11.1 per game and is second in steals at 2.0 per game during conference play.

AMIRA MABRY, TULANE – Sophomore, Forward, Converse, Texas

Mabry had an outstanding week in leading Tulane (16-6, 7-3 AAC) to a pair of American Athletic Conference victories after averaging 18.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. The Converse, Texas native shot 72 percent from the field and was 40 percent from 3-point range and led the Green Wave in scoring in both contests

Mabry started her week by putting up 21 points with six rebounds in a comeback victory over Charlotte.

She scored the game-tying bucket with 18 seconds remaining and had the team’s go-ahead free throw in an eventual 70-68 win over the 49ers. Mabry finished 7-for-10 from the floor and was 7-for-7 from the line.

In her return to her native Texas area against UTSA, Mabry led Tulane with 15 points as she shot 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc in the team’s 75-64 victory.
