NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana was among “others receiving votes” — 28th place with 31 points — when the NAIA announced Wednesday its Division I men’s basketball preseason coaches poll.

XULA was announced last week as the coaches’ No. 2 pick in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

XULA was 18-14 last season, 8-6 in the GCAC (tied for fourth place) and a semifinalist in the GCAC Tournament. The Gold Rush ranked 15th in NAIA Division I in scoring defense.

The XULA men will open their 81st season at 5 p.m. EDT Friday at Thomas University of Thomasville, Ga., then play Coastal Georgia at 4 p.m. EDT Saturday in Brunswick. The home opener will tip off at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Carver at the Convocation Center.

The Gold Rush have seven games against teams that made the DI preseason top 25: No. 7 William Carey (Nov. 5 home, Nov. 14 away), No. 8 Talladega (Jan. 25 home, Feb. 22 away), No. 17 Loyola of New Orleans (Nov. 26, home, Dec. 14 away) and No. 22 Wiley (Nov. 20 home).

Talladega, 24-8 last season, is the only GCAC team in the top 25. Also receiving votes from the GCAC was city rival Dillard (30th place).

Defending champion Georgetown (Ky.) received all nine first-place votes. The first regular-season rankings will be announced Nov. 27.
