Girls Basketball: Albany takes charge In overtime to down Brusly in Division II Non-Select semifinal

HAMMOND – Albany and Brusly went to war in the Division III (Non-Select) semifinals. The game was tied at 58 with 23 seconds left when Brusly had chance at the win. Jamia Robertson launched a three-pointer at the buzzer and missed, forcing overtime.

The Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Panthers 14-6 in the extra period to take a 72-64 victory Wednesday night at the University Center in the Division II Non-Selects semifinals.

Albany (29-2) took charge in overtime when Aubrey Hoyt scored the 1st four points giving them a 62-58 lead. Tia Anderson kept Brusly alive with a driving layup cutting the lead 62-60. The Lady Hornets answered with a jumper by Hoyt. Then Brilee Ford knocked down a three-pointer to give Albany a commanding 67-60 lead.

Brusly (27-7) had led throughout the game. Laila Clark and Tia Anderson got the Lady Panthers going with consecutive layups en route to a 9-3 lead. Ja’Meisha Williams scored three consecutive baskets to cut the deficit to 12-10 but the Lady Panthers answered with baskets by Ja’Laiya Martin and Allah Jarrell.

Clark and Jarrell kept things rolling for Brusly with consecutive buckets extending the lead to 20-12.  Cayden Boudreaux scored a jumper cutting the lead to 22-17. The Lady Panthers answered with a jumper by Alaiah Jarrell extending the lead to 28-19. Boudreaux kept Albany in striking distance with a jumper cutting the lead to 28-26. Then Amireyah Williams scored a driving layup and three-point play, giving Brusly a 31-26 advantage at the half.

“It took three quarters to get our bearings. Brusly came right at us and got us on our heals,” said Albany Head Coach Stacy Darouse. “They had us on our heals and we had to do some soul searching at halftime.”

The Lady Panthers took charge in the third quarter with layups by Jarrell, Anderson and Clark that put Brusly up 43-33.

Albany responded with a 14-0 run that changed the game. Boudreaux scored a jumper and layup to that gave her team its first lead since tipoff, 52-47.

Anderson bounced back with consecutive driving layups to put Brusly up two, but Williams answered inside for Albany tying the game.

Albany had four players scoring in double figures. Hoyt led the Lady Hornets with 14 points and eight rebounds. Ava Shields scored 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Williams finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Boudreaux scored 11 points and eight rebounds.

Brusly also had four players scoring in double figures, paced by Anderson with 17 points and eight rebounds. Clark finished with 15 points, two rebounds and four assists. Williams added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jarrell also scored 10 points.

“Too many turnovers. You can’t beat too many people with 25 turnovers,” said Brusly head coach Trent Ellis. “We did our best tonight and I don’t think we left anything out there. We just fell short in overtime.”

Albany will face top seed Wossman in the title game on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the University Center at Southeastern Louisiana University. Wossman downed No. 4 South Beauregard 60-47.
