Giaratano named SLC Player of the Week

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University senior guard Hailey Giaratano was named Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week in an announcement from the conference Monday afternoon.

The Ponchatoula native reached a career high of 27 points with seven rebounds in a 93-86 triple overtime win over UIW. Giaratano played 52 minutes in the triple overtime win while also finishing with 12 points against McNeese to help the Lady Lions protect their home court in week six of conference. Five other Lady Lions also contributed double-digit scoring in the last two games to accompany the senior who has collected 17 games in double-digit scoring.

Giaratano is the second player for Southeastern to claim SLC weekly honors this season, as teammate Jalencia Pierre was selected in week two of league play after tying a career high of 21 points in an overtime win over McNeese on the road. SLU holds a conference record of 9-1 and leads the conference suffering only one defeat in league play. The weekly award is the second in the veteran guard’s career who has been a key contributor and captain for Southeastern the last four seasons. The fifth-year senior was named Preseason SLC All-Conference First team while earning Tournament MVP and All-Louisiana Second team last season.

This season Giaratano leads the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game and ranks among the top ten in the conference in scoring, field goal percentage (41.9), assists (3.10) and assist/turnover ratio (1.59). Giaratano also leads the conference this season in minutes played (36.59).

The Lady Lions will matchup against Texas A&M-Commerce on the road Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. before moving on to face Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Prather Coliseum. Both matchups will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard live on The Lion 90.9 FM.
