Eight quarterbacks named Manning Award Stars of the Week

Fans Vote on Facebook to Select Overall Manning Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, has named eight quarterbacks as its “Stars of the Week.” College football fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. When voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. (Central), the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

This week’s eight Manning Award Stars of the Week are:

David Blough, Purdue (11-of-13, 235 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 99.6)

Blough, who is coming back from a shoulder injury, enters the game in the second quarter and completes six of his first seven attempts for 172 yards as Purdue pulls away in a 44-21 win over Ohio.

Will Grier, West Virginia (19-of-25, 352 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 98.1)

Grier tosses four of his touchdown passes in the first half as the Mountaineers jump to a big lead against East Carolina and finish with a 56-20 victory.

Lamar Jackson, Louisville (25-of-39, 393 yards 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 93.3)

Jackson also runs 19 times for 132 yards and three touchdowns as his 525 yards of offense is the most ever against North Carolina in a 47-35 ACC road victory.

Daniel Jones, Duke (29-of-45, 305 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, QBR: 89.3)

Jones adds a career-high 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns as he leads the Blue Devils to an impressive 41-17 victory over Northwestern.

Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma (27-of-35, 386 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 3 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 93.8)

Mayfield registers the 18th 300-yard game of his career as he leads the Sooners to an impressive 31-16 victory over No. 2 Ohio State on the road.

Shane Morris, Central Michigan (28-of-37, 467 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 89.4)

Morris shatters his previous career-best for passing yards (the third-most in school history) as he leads the Chippewas to a 45-27 road victory over Kansas.

Josh Rosen, UCLA (22-of-25, 329 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 94.5)

Rosen sets his career-high for passing touchdowns and has now led the Bruins to touchdowns on 12 of his last 14 possessions following a 56-23 victory over Hawaii.

Nate Stanley, Iowa (27-of-41, 333 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT, QBR: 83.4)

Stanley connects on a 46-yard touchdown pass to knot the game at 38 with 1:09 to go in regulation and then tosses a 5-yard TD in overtime as the Hawkeyes defeat archrival Iowa State, 44-41, on the road.

While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List, additional quarterbacks are expected to be added to the Watch List later in the season. The 10 finalists for the honor will be announced on Thursday, November 30 and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.

In its first 13 years, the Manning Award has recognized the top names in college football. It has honored quarterbacks from 11 different schools and from four different conferences. The Southeastern Conference (Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton, JaMarcus Russell and Tim Tebow) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (Deshaun Watson twice, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston) lead the way with four Manning Award wins each, while Texas is the only school with two different winners (Colt McCoy and Vince Young).

All the Manning Award winners follow in the footsteps of the Mannings themselves. In college, Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning combined for over 25,000 passing yards and 201 touchdowns while playing in 10 bowl games and earning four bowl MVP awards. Archie was the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, while both Peyton and Eli were selected No. 1 overall.

In addition to the Manning Award’s yearly honor, each week during the regular season, eight quarterbacks are recognized as Manning Quarterbacks of the Week. Sixty-one players from 59 different schools were honored during the 2016 season.
