Delgado defeats Baton Rouge Community College to take Region XXIII title

New Orleans — Delgado defeated Baton Rouge 11-1 Sunday to claim the 2018 Region XXIII Division I Championship at Maestri Field at Privateer Park.

Delgado hit the board in second inning when Blake Freeman tripled and scored on a single by Mason Diaz. In the third, Brandon Briuglio singled and Blake Way reached on a fielder’s choice. Tyler McManus doubled to score Briuglio and Grant Schulz singled to score Way. Mason Diaz reached on an outfield error that plated the two base runners for Delgado to take a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, Beau Freeman singled to lead off the frame, advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Brandon Briuglio reached as a hit batter before Blake Way doubled to score both runs. Grant Schulz doubled two batters later to score Way.

Baton Rouge’s sole run came in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Troy Banks that scored David Smith, who led off with a single.

In the fifth, Gabe Gravois reached on a single, advanced on a stolen base and wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Duhon. Brandon Briuglio singled and Blake Way was hit by a pitch. Tyler McManus singled and an infield error allowed both runs to score to finalize Delgado’s 11-1, walkoff mercy rule victory that clinched the best-of-seven game series and the Region XXIII Division I Title.

Mason Mayfield picked up his seventh win of the season on the mound, pitching the complete game.

With the victory, the Dolphins capture the program’s twelth Region XXIII Championship in thirteen seasons. Delgado will advance to the South Central District regional to be hosted by the Region XVI Champion in Oklahoma on May 17-20.
