WEST MONROE – A stifling defense and some big plays Friday night propelled Carencro to a 16-0 road upset of West Monroe on Don Shows Field at Rebel Stadium to begin the 2020 regular season.

Carencro, led by quarterback Travvyion Faulk, kept pushing the envelope and converted 2-of-4 fourth down attempts and also picked up a first down on a first quarter roughing the punter penalty that eventually led to a Faulk touchdown pass and an early 6-0 lead. The opening drive ate up more than six minutes of the clock and set the tone for the Bears on a night the visitors dominated possession.

West Monroe struggled offensively to the tune of less than 20 yards total offense in the first half.

“It is what a young offensive line does,” West Monroe offensive coordinator Glenn Hunt said of the inconsistency on offense. “We made some dumb mistakes. But everybody knew this would be a tough few weeks with this young offensive line.”

West Monroe held strong defensively and trailed just 6-0 at halftime. West Monroe got a big spark with the third quarter kickoff being returned to midfield and running back Derome Williams popping free for a 45-yard run.

Two plays later, the Carencro defense forced a fumble to end the threat. Carencro forced two turnovers on the night and several punts.

Carencro added a 39-yard field goal and running back Trelyan Prejean scored on a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
