Battle-tested St. Augustine rolls over McKinley, 43-6

BATON ROUGE – It Was the Dawson Simmons to Tulane commit Joshua Jackson show Friday night as the two combined for three touchdowns through the as No. 22 St. Augustine posted a 43-6 first round playoff victory against No. 11 McKinley in the opening round of the Division I Select playoffs.

The senior quarterback Simmons and Tulane commit wide receiver Jackson were part of a dominant effort against the overmatch Panthers. Jackson has 101 yards receiving.

McKinley’s red-hot offense was cooled down by the purple Knights, who held the Panthers to 176 yards total offense and nine first downs.

“Felt good to get a win, first round of the playoff. We needed that to bounce and get some confidence,” St. Augustine Coach Nick Foster Said. “We’re in the toughest district I feel in the country but we’re familiar with (Curtis). they’re familiar with us,I expect it to be a slug fest.”

St. Augustine (4-7) advances to play District 9-5A rival John Curtis. The Patriots defeated the Purple Knights 36-26 on Oct. 21.

In a game that started as a defensive struggle, St. Augustine started the scoring with an eight-play, 59-yard drive capped by a seven-yard touchdown pass from Simmons to Hubert Caliste for the only points of the first quarter.

The Purple Knights broke the game wide open in the second quarter with a trio Touchdowns to build a 25-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Keith Hill added a three-yard touchdown run in the second half for St. Aug.

McKinkey (7-4) managed their lone score came late in the third quarter on a 11-yard touchdown grab by Deontae Camel from Jaylyn Tyler to cut the Purple Knights’ lead to 31-6.

St. Augustine backup quarterback Vashaun Coulon tossed the final two scores in the final stanza. The sophomore had scoring passes to Ray’Quan Williams and Jaroy Jackson to provided the final margin.
