Allstate Sugar Bowl announces this week’s Manning Award Futures

Four NOLA area QBs honored as Quarterbacks of the Week; fans can vote for favorite on Twitter

NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl has announced this week’s Manning Award Futures – four local high school quarterbacks who turned in outstanding performances on the football field this past weekend. Fans now have the opportunity to go to Twitter (@SugarBowlNola) to vote for their favorite performance of the week.

The Manning Award, which recognizes the top collegiate quarterback in the nation on an annual basis, was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.

Manning Award Futures – High School QBs of the Week, 10/25/21:

Jack Gilliken, Salmen High School (12-of-22, 123 total yards, 3 TDs)

Gilliken, who ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, directed a strong Spartan offensive attack as Salmen picked up a 26-7 Homecoming victory over Pearl River in District 9-4A action.

Kristian Kraft, Kenner Discovery (8-of-11, 194 total yards, 4 TDs)

Kraft opened the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown and closed it with a 47-yard delivery as the Swamp Owls topped Thomas Jefferson, 37-0, in District 11-3A play.

Garrett Mmahat, Brother Martin High School (7-of-10, 210 yards, 2 TDs)

Mmahat, who connected on an 81-yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage, had a strong performance as Brother Martin defeated defending Class 4A state champ Carencro, 35-6.

AJ Samuel, Edna Karr High School (11-of-12, 268 total yards, 3 TDs)

Samuel, who passed for 220 yards and ran for 48 more, led the Cougars to seven touchdowns on nine possessions as they rolled to a 50-7 rout of L.B. Landry at Behrman Stadium.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 99 Hall of Fame players, 51 Hall of Fame coaches and 19 Heisman Trophy winners in its 87-year history. The 88th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, which will feature top teams from the Big 12 and the SEC, is scheduled to be played on January 1, 2022. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics.
