Four Nola area QBs spotlighted by the Sugar Bowl; fans can vote for favorite on Twitter

NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl has announced this week’s Manning Award Futures – four local high school quarterbacks who turned in outstanding performances on the football field this past weekend. Fans now have the opportunity to go to Twitter (@SugarBowlNola) to vote for their favorite performance of the week.

The Manning Award, which recognizes the top collegiate quarterback in the nation on an annual basis, was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.

Manning Award Futures – High School QBs of the Week, 11/8/22:

Keddrick Connelly, Warren Easton (16-of-23, 248 total yards, 5 TDs)

With his team trailing 26-8 early in the second half, Connelly went to work, tossing three TD passes and running for another as the Eagles pulled away for a 59-38 win over McDonogh 35 to capture the District 11-4A Championship.

Amaré Cooper, St. Augustine (13-of-22, 143 yards, 2 TDs)

Cooper threw TD passes for both of the Purple Knights’ scores as they took down Brother Martin, 14-13 in a District 9-5A showdown.

AJ Samuel, Edna Karr (8-of-10, 134 yards, 3 TDs)

Samuel, who only played the first half due to injury, found three different receivers for touchdowns as the Cougars jumped to a 32-0 advantage over John Curtis in a 38-6 victory.

D’Wanyé Winfield, Lutcher (2-for-2, 246 total yards, 4 TDs)

Winfield, who passed for 80 yards and ran for 166. set the school record for career touchdowns with 78 as he passed for two scores and ran for two more in a 55-13 win over Ellender.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 100 Hall of Fame players, 51 Hall of Fame coaches and 20 Heisman Trophy winners in its 88-year history. The 89th annual Sugar Bowl Classic is scheduled to be played on Saturday, December 31, 2022. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards, scholarships and clinics.
