UNO athletic department takes part in the club’s annual turkey fry

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) teamed with the Dawn Busters Kiwanis Club for the Annual Turkey Fry on Nov. 20 and 22, marking the second year UNO Athletics has assisted with the preparation of the annual turkey fry.

The Dawn Busters Kiwanis Club sells fried turkeys to help finance its many projects to benefit children in the New Orleans and Metairie area. With the help of the UNO SAAC, a record 950 fried cajun-injected turkeys were prepared with all proceeds going to the weekly Dawn Busters Kiwanis Club Feeding the Homeless, every other Monday at Lantern Light and the Dawn Busters Rewards for Reading Program, December’s event.

“It was a fun experience for our team and all of the student-athletes involved,” said senior women’s basketball guard Randi Brown. “We loved assisting during the holidays and being a part of something bigger than ourselves.

The New Orleans SAAC represented UNO within the local community, engaging with key clubs and high schools in the area, prepping and transporting turkeys. Members of the golf, men’s and women’s tennis programs and women’s basketball participated in the event.

The Dawn Busters Kiwanis Club is the largest Kiwanis Club in New Orleans. The club’s liaison is Skip Miller while the coordinator for student-athlete enrichment is Martin Lopez IV.
