Southern Miss takes 13-3 run rule win in 8 innings over ULM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss scored the final 13 runs of the game to take the victory and the series over ULM, 13-3 in eight innings, Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

Southern Miss (25-14 overall, 11-6 Sun Belt Conference) scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the win. Tucker Stockman had three hits, including a double and a grand slam, with five RBIs, two runs scored and two walks to pace USM. Slade Wilks had three hits, with a double and triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.

ULM (17-21, 5-12) led 3-0 in the top of the third inning. Jake Haggard picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the second inning to score Colby Lunsford, while Shawn Dalton Weatherbee hit a 2-run homer in the top of the third inning to expand the lead. The Warhawks had six hits over the first three innings, but only mustered one hit over the final five innings. Easton Winfield and Jayson Zmejkoski each had two hits for the Warhawks.

Will Armistead (1-1) earned the win out of the bullpen for USM, with four shutout innings, allowing one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Beau Blanchard (2-4) suffered the loss for ULM, working into the third inning, allowing four runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Dalton Hitt threw a career-high 2 2/3 shutout innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

ULM tries to salvage a game from the series at 1 p.m. Sunday in Hattiesburg.
