Islanders pull away late, split series with Privateers

New Orleans featured two double digit scorers

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Randi Brown finished with 25 points, four assists and two steals and Kayla Mundy added 15 points, three dimes and three steals in the University of New Orleans’ (11-13, 7-6 Southland) 75-68 setback versus Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (15-8, 8-4 Southland) Saturday afternoon at American Bank Center.

FIRST QUARTER
The Privateers offset a 7-0 Islander run with a 7-0 run of their own and ended the half with six unanswered, capped off by a long three by Mundy to take a 24-15 lead into the second period. Brown led all players with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the stanza, Mundy added five points, three steals and two assists and Halie Matthews dished out two assists.

SECOND QUARTER
The New Orleans offense slowed some but remained in the lead at the half 37-32 behind 15 Brown points and 11 by Mundy. Four players recorded two assists in the first half.

Much like the first, Mundy drained an open triple with seconds to spare in the second quarter.

THIRD QUARTER
The Ders came out with six unanswered to regain the lead and after a Shania Woods layup, connected on a trey to go up 41-39.

Moments later, a 7-0 Corpus Christi run gave the Blue and Green an eight-point lead with 3:55 to go. At this point, the Islanders outscored the Privateers 19-6. However, New Orleans closed the gap in a hurry, with a 10-0 and the trap defense forcing three turnovers, to take a three-point lead with 38 ticks to go. The back-to-back triples by Mariah Wright put UNO back in front and the clubs went into the final period of regulation tied at 58.

In the final 3:55, the Silver and Blue outscored by eight.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Islanders went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to take the second meeting between the programs this season, 75-68.

INSIDE THE BOX
Four players reached double figures for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, led by Emma Young’s 17.

NEXT UP
The Privateers return to Lakefront Arena next week to host Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday and McNeese Saturday on Homecoming.
