LAFAYETTE – Paced by a four-under-par 68 by Grant Reagan in the final round, C. E. Byrd of Shreveport claimed its seventh Boys Division I title in the last nine years here Wednesday at the Ochsner Health LHSAA State Golf Championships.

Byrd, which was tied for the lead with St. Paul’s after Tuesday’s first round, posted a four-under 284 score on Wednesday’s final trip around the 6,348-yard par-72 The Wetlands course. That tied for the day’s low round and gave Byrd a 573 team total, good enough for a two-stroke edge over St. Paul’s and Catholic-Baton Rouge in the team championship.

Kyle Traub of Brother Martin, who scorched the field with a seven-under 65 in Tuesday’s first round, added a 70 on Wednesday and finished at 65-70—135 for a two-stroke edge over Jesuit’s Duke Nitcher (137) for individual honors.

Cason Toms of Benton and Grant Reagan of Byrd both matched Nitcher for the day’s low round at 68 and finished tied for third at six-under 138. Drew Sliman of Lafayette High, Nick Kelsey of St. Paul’s and Miller Davis of Benton all tied for fifth with a four-under 140 total.

Byrd also got a final-round 69 from James Holtsclaw to help its team total, with Holtsclaw tied with Preston Paulk of Northshore and Drew Prieto of Catholic-Baton Rouge at 141. A total of 10 golfers broke par over two rounds at The Wetlands.

St. Paul’s and Catholic High tied for second at 575, with Benton one more stroke back at 576, meaning that four teams finished within three strokes of the championship. Those same four teams had all been within two strokes of the lead after Tuesday’s first round.

LAFAYETTE – Quitman put three players in the top 15 individuals and followed the third-place finish of Eli Walker to claim its first-ever Boys Division IV title here Wednesday in the final round of the Ochsner Health LHSAA State Golf Championships.

The Wolverines posted a 327 team score to go with its 318 opening round when they built a nine-shot lead, and finished eight shots ahead of Ouachita Christian with a 645 score. OCS, the runner-up for the second straight year after winning the 2022 title, had the low team round of the day at 326 and finished with a 653 team score over the 6,348-yard par-72 The Wetlands course.

Logan Heltz of Christ Episcopal, the defending champion and first-day leader with a five-under 67, added a two-under 70 on Wednesday – the low round of the day — and claimed the individual title with a seven-under 137 total. He finished two strokes ahead of Riverside’s Cole Haase, who finished at 68-71—139 to finish as runner-up for the second straight year.

Walker finished third with a 69-73—142 score, while Silas Lovett of Ouachita Christian was fourth at 70-78—148 and Philip Summers of Vermilion Catholic was fifth at 77-76—153.

Quitman finished third last year before moving up to the top spot on Wednesday, with Ouachita Christian seven shots ahead of third-place finisher Vermilion Catholic (660). Defending champion Episcopal-Acadiana finished fourth at 673.

YOUNGSVILLE – Mattie Prugahn prevailed in a playoff to win the individual title, but her Barbe team came up short of its second straight team title as Benton won a sudden-death playoff to take Division I Girls top honors here Wednesday at the Ochsner Health LHSAA State Golf Championships.

Prugahn, who finished fourth last year in helping Barbe claim the team title, tied with Evelyn Artiera of Walker at three-over 151 at the end of Wednesday’s second round. In their sudden-death playoff, Prugahn found the green in two on the par-four first hole while Artiera missed the green on the left side and was unable to get up and down. Prugahn two-putted from 20 feet for the individual title.

Prugahn was also Barbe’s representative in the team playoff, but Benton’s Abigail McWilliams’ second shot on the first hole wound up 15 feet from the pin. Prugahn found a bunker in front of the green and blasted out long, eventually missing a bogey putt while McWilliams two-putted and holed a two-footer to give Benton the team crown.

Those teams tied at 313 in the team chase, after Benton led by 12 strokes in Tuesday’s opening round and Barbe had the low round of the day Wednesday with an even-par 148 total. Archbishop Hannan finished third, eight strokes back at 321, while Academy of the Sacred Heart finished fourth at 327.

McWIlliams finished tied for third individually with Teagan Connors of The Willow School at five-over 153 and Archbishop Hannan’s Ashlyn Crimmins finished fifth at 154.

YOUNGSVILLE – Sophia Macias of Episcopal added to her big first-day advantage to claim individual honors, and Ascension Christian also held onto a first-round lead to win the Girls Division II team championship here Wednesday at the Ochsner Health LHSAA State Golf Championship.

Macias, last year’s runner-up, turned in the day’s low round by 15 strokes on Wednesday over the 5,679-yard par-74 Les Vieux Chenes layout, carding a five-under 69 to go with her first-round 75. Her two-day 144 total gave her a 29-stroke advantage over runner up Ali Evans of Westlake in the individual championship.

Ascension Christian, which led by eight strokes after Tuesday’s opening round, again had the day’s best round with a 174 total from Peyton Flynn (84) and Nicasia Chase (90). The team finished with a two-day 357 total, winning by 14 strokes over Westlake (371).

Flynn finished third individually with a 174 score, while Ashley Biehl of Ursuline Academy finished fourth at 177 and Sophia Crespo of University Lab and Claire Chauvin of St. Thomas Aquinas tied for fifth at 178.

Trailing Ascension Christian and Westlake in the team race were St. John in fourth at 398 and St. Thomas Aquinas in fourth at 403.
