Zion summer league

Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson will not suit up for Team USA this summer.

This year’s top overall draft choice has withdrawn from USA Basketball’s training camp next month.

Williamson joins a list of top names including Anthony Davis, James Harden and Bradley Beal to pull back from participation with the national team ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

Williamson played in just the first half of the opening game of NBA Summer League in Las Vegas before the Pelicans decided to sideline him for the remainder of the tournament. The Duke product suffered a bruised knee in the July 5 contest with the Knicks squad, so New Orleans management chose to keep him out of the lineup as a precaution. Williamson’s overall fitness level was also in question at the time, and he is expected to focus on it ahead of his first professional season.
