Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has surpassed the six-to-eight week timetable the team announced for his return to action after his surgery.

However, the rookie is not yet ready to make his regular season debut.

Williamson participated in shooting drills at Pelicans’ shootaround Tuesday but head coach Alvin Gentry said this past summer’s top overall NBA pick is able to perform “weight-bearing exercises” with saying when he would return to practice much less actual games.

“We’re really excited with where he’s at. “He’s made really good progress. I know we’ve reached the eight-week point and everyone is ready to see him. I think we’re a little ways away yet, but today was a really big first step.”

New Orleans fell to 6-22 with a 108-101 home loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night.
