XULA tennis teams reach national semifinals again

MOBILE, Ala. — For the second consecutive year, both Xavier University of Louisiana tennis teams have reached the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship tournament.

The XULA men, ranked and seeded seventh, advanced by upsetting Reinhardt 5-1 Thursday morning. The Eagles (17-3) were ranked and seeded second, and it was the first time ever that the XULA men defeated the NAIA’s No. 2 team.

Then in the afternoon, the XULA women eliminated William Woods and put together back-to-back 5-0 victories at nationals for the first time.

In Friday’s semifinals, the Gold Rush will play Cardinal Stritch — ranked and seeded third — at 9 a.m. The Gold Nuggets will play Keiser — ranked and seeded second — at 1 p.m. Championship matches will be played Saturday. Admission is free for every round at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center.

The Gold Rush (16-8) won 2-of-3 doubles matches, then got singles victories from Pierre Andrieu, Ghassan Alansi and Gabriel Niculescu. Andrieu clinched with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on the fifth court against Mario Belloni Tomas. Charlene Goreau, a three-time first-team NAIA All-American, clinched for the Gold Nuggets (19-5) on the first court with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Zlata Shuraeva.
