XULA splits doubleheaders in baseball, softball Saturday
Xavier University of Louisiana split a Red River Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday with Jarvis Christian at Wesley Barrow Stadium, winning 10-2 and then losing 5-3 in 12 innings.
Deionte Norris hit a two-run double, Courtland Posey hit a two-run single, and Zachary Elias led off the second inning with a home run for the Gold Rush during the opener. Nigel Mayfield pitched a complete game.
XULA never led in the second game, which Jarvis Christian won on Robert Morales’ two-run, two-out double.
XULA is 18-21 overall and 14-15 in the RRAC; Jarvis Christian is 13-35 and 8-21. XULA won the series two games to one.
The Gold Rush will close the regular season in a three-game RRAC series that will begin Friday at Louisiana Christian, then compete in the RRAC Tournament May 6-9 at Sterlington, La.
In softball action, Xavier University of Louisiana split RRAC doubleheader Saturday with Huston-Tillotson at Wesley Barrow, winning 5-1 and then losing 8-7 in 11 innings.
In the opener, XULA freshman right-hander Carina Chargois pitched a complete-game victory for the second straight day, Alexis Richardson went 3-for-3, and Madison Winston, Mecolett Bradley, Chenai Keyes, Brittany Ensley and Amaya Eubanks drove in runs for the Gold Nuggets.
In the second game a Grace Ross two-out single — her first hit of the game — scored Willow Houston with the winning run. Bradley, Eubanks and Destyn Jones were honored during a senior-day ceremony.
XULA is 20-27 overall and 14-14 in the RRAC; Huston-Tillotson is 19-21 and 13-15.
The Gold Nuggets will close its regular season with a 3 p.m. Tuesday home doubleheader against NCAA Division I Southern, then compete in the RRAC Tournament May 5-7 at San Antonio.
