NEW ORLEANS — As expected, the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced Monday evening that Xavier University of Louisiana men’s basketball will be the No. 2 seed for the league’s postseason tournament.

As a result XULA will play host to No. 7 seed Tougaloo in the opening round Feb. 24 at the Convocation Center. The winner will play No. 3 seed Dillard or No. 6 Philander Smith in the semifinals Feb. 27 at Jacksonville, Fla.

XULA is 10-3 overall and finished second in the GCAC regular season with at 5-1. Tougaloo (2-8) finished last at 0-6.

But the Bulldogs have a victory this season against XULA: 91-90 in double overtime Jan. 28 at the Convocation Center despite a career-high 38 points by XULA’s Rayshawn Mart. XULA defeated Tougaloo 78-51 in their GCAC game Jan. 11 at Talladega, Ala.

Regular-season champion Talladega received a first-round bye and will play No. 4 Rust or No. 5 Edward Waters in the other semifinal. The championship game will be Feb. 28.

Rust, Edward Waters and Philander Smith tied for fourth place in the regular season and were even on all tiebreakers. As a result GCAC Commissioner Kiki Baker Barnes used an online dice-roll application to assign those teams to the tournament bracket.

In GCAC women’s basketball, none of the seven seeds have been determined because there are eight games still to be played and three teams have one loss apiece.

Next for XULA will be a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at Tougaloo: women’s game at 5:30 p.m., then the men’s game at 7:30. Another non-conference women’s matchup between GCAC teams — Tuesday at the Convocation Center, XULA vs. Dillard — was postponed Monday and has not yet been rescheduled.
