NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana was picked to finish first in the Red River Athletic Conference 2022-23 women’s basketball preseason poll of the league’s head coaches.

The RRAC announced the poll Wednesday.

XULA received 4-of-10 first-place votes and 113 points. LSU-Shreveport is second with two first-place votes and 104 points, and Our Lady of the Lake received four first-place votes and 102 points.

XULA’s returning players from last season include:
•  Nia Bishop, a 5-foot-4 senior guard who averaged 12.2 points and 2.2 steals per game in 2021-22 and was first-team All-RRAC.
•  Abryhia Irons, a 5-8 senior guard who averaged 8.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, three assists and 2.3 steals and was RRAC Defensive Player of the Year.
•  Victory Udechi, a 5-10 fifth-year forward who averaged 8.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and two steals.
•  Rayna Ross, a 5-9 junior guard/forward who averaged 5.4 points.

“Many of our top players from last season are back,” said Bo Browder, who enters his 24th season as head coach with a XULA record of 519-216 (.706). “We recruited very well. We have a chance to be better than last season.”

XULA will travel to Memphis, Tenn., for a 4 p.m. Oct. 29 exhibition against NCAA Division II LeMoyne-Owen, then play that same team at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at XULA’s Convocation Center in the regular-season opener on homecoming Saturday. This is the Gold Nuggets’ 45th season of the Title IX era.

XULA last season was 21-7, won the RRAC East Division championship and qualified for NAIA nationals. This season there are no divisions; each RRAC team will play 20 league games.
